ICY TRAVEL & POWER OUTAGE POTENTIAL
If you’ve ventured out today, you’re probably noticing the very messy and slippery conditions on the roads and sidewalks. Overnight snow has transitioned into a wintry mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain, making travel dangerous. Our advice: avoid driving if possible today!
We are currently under a Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisory that will remain in effect until 7 PM tonight, but the Cape and Islands are seeing mostly rain. The biggest concern for the day is freezing rain, especially across parts of central Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire, where ice accumulations could reach up to 0.25 inches. This means not only dangerous roads but also an increased risk of power outages.
Closer to the coast, especially near Boston, we can expect heavy rain at times this afternoon. If you can, get out and clear off the snow and slush while you can—temperatures will plunge overnight, turning everything into ice as conditions freeze up again.
Temperatures today will vary depending on where you are: southeastern Massachusetts will see temps in the 40s and 50s with rain, the Boston area is hovering around the mid/upper 30s with a chilly rain today, and northern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire will stay in the low 30s with freezing rain.
The storm will gradually wind down tonight, but we’re keeping a close eye on stronger wind gusts that will pick up as the system clears.
MONDAY CONCERNS
A High Wind Warning has been issued for the interior through 7 PM Monday with gusts up to 60 mph, with Wind Advisories in place across eastern Massachusetts, where gusts could reach 50 mph.
Icy conditions will continue into Monday morning, so early travel could be treacherous, and power outages are still a concern.
REST OF THE WEEK
Looking ahead to the rest of the week, temperatures will drop into the upper 20s on Monday, the wind will make it feel much colder. We’ll experience cool, dry, and breezy conditions through midweek. But don’t get too comfortable—another storm is on the horizon for Thursday, and it could bring more snow!
Stay safe out there, and make sure to check back for updates throughout the day.
