STANLEY CUP FINAL: Gunnarsson's overtime goal skewers Bruins in Game 2

BOSTON — The Boston Bruins never trailed in Game 2 until Carl Gunnarsson shot in overtime ended the contest. The St. Louis defenseman netted the game-winner, lifting the Blues to victory and evening the series.

The 3-2 result evens the series, 1-1, with the Final shifting to St. Louis for Games 3 and 4 this upcoming Saturday and Monday, respectively.

Boston got goals from Charlie Coyle and Joakim Nordstrom in the first, while St. Louis kept pace in the opening frame with tallies from Robert Bortuzzo and Valdimir Tarasenko.

Matt Grzelcyk was injured in the contest, finding himself on the receiving end of a board by Oskar Sundqvist in the first period. Grzelcyk did not return to the contest.

Boston, the champions of the Eastern Conference, reached their third Stanley Cup Final in nine seasons after sweeping the Carolina Hurricanes in the Conference Finals. Conversely, St. Louis appears in the championship round for the first time in 49 years after defeating the San Jose Sharks in six games in the Western Conference Finals.

This series is the second time the two squads square off with the Stanley Cup on the line. The first came in 1970 - the last time the Blues played in the final round - when Boston won the series four games to none.

11:09 p.m.: Carl Gunnarsson rips home a one-timer in OT to give the Blues the 3-2 win, evening the series at 1-1.

11:05 p.m.: Overtime has begun in Game 2.

10:50 p.m.: End of Regulation: Boston 2, Blues 2. On to overtime we go.

10:44 p.m.: St. Louis kills off the minor penalty.

10:40 p.m.: After a back and forth third period, the Bruins head to the power play with 6:38 to go with Schenn off for slashing.

10:20 p.m.: The third period is underway.

9:59 p.m.: End of 2: Bruins 2, Blues 2

9:54 p.m.: Bruins kill off the first two minutes of the penalty, and then get the second half negated on a goalie interference penalty by the Blues.

9:49 p.m.: Connor Clifton commits a high stick and draws blood, meaning St. Louis gets a 4-minute man-advantage with 4:21 to go in the second.

9:44 p.m.: Bruins unable to cash in on the power play. Score remains tied at 2-2.

9:41 p.m.: Joel Edmunson gets whistled for tripping with 7:41 to go in the middle frame. Bruins head back to the man-advantage.

9:27 p.m.: Boston kills it off.

9:24 p.m.: Bruins will have to kill off a penalty with Connor Clifton going off for interference.

9:15 p.m.: The second period is underway in Boston. Matt Grzelcyk was NOT on the bench to begin the frame.

8:58 p.m.: The power play comes to an end for the Bruins as does the first period. End of 1: Boston 2, St. Louis 2.

8:56 p.m.: Defenseman Matt Grzelcyk has to be helped off the ice after taking a hit from behind into the boards. Bruins go to the power play as Sundqvist gets called for boarding.

8:48 p.m.: Vladimir Tarasenko tosses his second rebound opportunity into the back of the net with nearly five minutes to go to even the score at 2-2.

8:39 p.m.: Joakim Nordstrom quickly gives the Bruins the lead back, slipping a shot through Binnington's five-hole. 2-1 Boston.

8:38 p.m.: Robert Bortuzzo throws a shot on goal that deflects in off Matt Grzelcyk to tie the score at 1-1.

8:25 p.m.: Charlie Coyle deposits a one-timer from the slot past Jordan Binnington to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead less than 5 minutes into the contest. Coyle's goal came on the power play with Samuel Blais off for goaltender interference.

7:40 p.m.: The Bruins banner captain for Game 2 will be New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
