Patriots complete interview with Mike Vrabel for head coaching vacancy

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — After an abysmal 4-13 record, the New England Patriots, once the league’s crown jewel franchise, are searching yet again for a head coach to lead them to the promised land after firing first-year coach Jerod Mayo.

And that search has led them to interview a familiar face, former Patriot and three-time Super Bowl Champion Mike Vrabel. He was just inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2023.

Vrabel completed his interview with Patriots ownership in Boston for the head coaching position on Thursday afternoon.

His most recent head coaching experience was with the Tennessee Titans from 2018-2023. During Vrabel’s tenure, he compiled a 54-45 record, which included 3 playoff appearances, an AFC Championship Game appearance, and an AP Coach of the Year award for his work in the 2021-22 NFL season.

During the 2024 season, Vrabel was a coaching and personnel consultant for the Cleveland Browns.

According to reports, Vrabel has already interviewed for the New York Jets and Chicago Bears head coaching vacancies.

If hired, Vrabel will be tasked with turning around an “untenable situation,” that resulted in the league’s fourth-worst record.

He will inherit a roster that finished in the bottom half of the league in most major offensive and defensive statistics.

However, with the emergence of rookie quarterback Drake Maye, the fourth pick in the 2025 NFL draft, and the most cap space in the league, the Patriots are in a prime position to entice any would-be head coaching candidate.

Detroit Lions Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson will also interview for the Patriots head coaching vacancy on Friday, according to reports by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
