Jerod Mayo announces retirement on Instagram

FOXBORO — Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo, after eight seasons in New England, announced his retirement in an Instagram post.

"After a lot of thought, Chantel and I take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude for what we consider a life-changing event," wrote Mayo, "That of becoming a New England Patriot for the past eight years. We are extremely grateful to "Thundercat" Jonathan, the Kraft family, Coach Belichick, the Pats organization and the most amazing fans in contributing to these pages of our lives.

"As my family and I prepare for the future, be sure that the Pats memories will always hold a special place in our hearts.  #51 - J Mayo."

He also included a caption with his instagram post that read, "RETIRING A PATRIOT."

Mayo was the Patriots first-round pick in 2008 and appeared in two Super Bowls, winning a championship with New England following the 2014 season.
