BOSTON — Two people, including an 8-year-old girl, were shot and wounded in a park the city's Dorchester neighborhood Thursday night as thousands of Boston residents were celebrating the Fourth of July fireworks, police said.

The shooting happened around 11 p.m. at the Mary Hannon Park on Dudley Street.

Boston Police said a 35-year-old man and an 8-year-old girl were both shot.

The girl, who was shot in the foot, is expected to be OK; the man was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, police said.

It's unclear if the two knew each other.

As the sound of fireworks thundered throughout the city, police were seen gathering evidence in multiple locations around the park.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh says the violence is uncalled for and even more disturbing that a young girl was involved.

No arrests have been made. Boston Police are urging anyone with information to contact them.
