Worcester Public Schools warn of possible bus driver strike

WORCESTER, Mass. — Parents with children in the Worcester Public School District received a voicemail from Superintendent Maureen Binienda Friday night warning of a possible bus strike for the start of school.

Students are set to return Monday, but if an agreement between the bus company and drivers' union is not met it could be pushed back.

The company and union are set to meet over the weekend to continue working toward an agreement.

There are nearly 140 bus drivers and monitors in Worcester that have been working without a contract for nine months.

The drivers are represented by Teamsters Local 170 and have been fighting for better pay, improved work conditions, better healthcare and retirement.

Binieda says the city has been negotiating with Durham School Services, the private bus company they contract with.

Both the city and the bus company are hoping to reach a resolution quickly so as to avoid any disruptions.
