Worcester nursing home residents move out as COVID-19 patients move in

WORCESTER, Mass. — Some health leaders in the Worcester area are turning to using nursing homes to treat coronavirus patients.

On Saturday, 147 residents at the Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center began relocating. Other nursing homes are expected to follow suit.

Massachusetts says nursing homes like Beaumont are perfect for patients who are recovering from coronavirus because unlike hotels and dorm rooms, they have medical equipment such as oxygen and a trained staff.

Fifty of the residents will move to sister facilities in Westborough and Northbridge. The rest will move to different facilities in Western Massachusetts.

Moving these elder-immune compromised patients is risky. Some family members were upset by the news, but the president of the healthcare company that owns the facility says it’s a necessary move to keep everyone safe.
