SANDWICH, Mass. — A Sandwich woman narrowly escaped serious injuries after a turkey flew onto her car's windshield.

Police say the 43-year-old was driving down Route 6A in East Sandwich at around 8:30 a.m. when she hit the bird that was crossing the road.

The turkey crashed through the 2007 Kia Sportage's windshield, flying through the driver and the unoccupied passenger seats.

Officials say the bird continued through the passenger compartment, striking the car's rear tailgate.

The driver sustained minor injuries from the broken glass. Preliminary investigation suggests solar glare may have been a contributing factor to the crash.

The turkey did not survive and the car had to be towed from the scene.
