WINTHROP, Mass. — Nathan Allen, the man authorities have identified as the shooter in Saturday’s deadly attack in Winthrop that targeted two African American residents, attended UMass Dartmouth at the same time as Boston Marathon Bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

UMass Dartmouth confirms that Nathan Allen graduated the University in 2014 with a degree in Biology. Tsarnaev did not graduate, he was arrested for his role in the deadly Boston Marathon attacks the year before.

The UMass Dartmouth class had nearly 1,600 students. It is not known if Allen and Tsarnaev knew each other.

Suffolk County DA Rachael Rollins said Allen wrote derogatory thoughts about Black people and Jewish people in a notebook found during the investigation.

Both Allen and Tsarnaev held extremist views and committed acts of terrorism. It’s a twist in the investigation that authorities will now have to consider.
