NEW YORK — #MakeDonaldDrumpfAgain is a hashtag that has been across Twitter all day Monday.
It looks like it picked up steam from comedian John Oliver skewering the Republican presidential candidate on his HBO show "Last Week Tonight With John Oliver."
Oliver broke down inconsistencies in Trump's past statements compared to what the candidate has said since he started running.
The show runs a segment of soundbites of supporters, saying they support Trump because he "tells it like it is," he self-funds his own campaign, and tells the truth, unwavering in his opinion.
Oliver then goes through and points out holes in those supporters' remarks before coming to his last point.
"It turns out the name Trump was not always his family's name," Oliver said. "One biographer found that a prescient ancestor had changed it from, and this is true, Drumpf."
"If you are thinking of voting for Donald Trump, the charismatic guy promising to make America great again, stop and take a moment to imagine how you would feel if you just met guy named Donald Drumpf, a litigious serial liar with a string of broken business ventures and the support of a former Klan leader," Oliver said.
The Boston Globe reported that the biography mentioned by Oliver is The Trumps: Three Generations That Built An Empire."
The writer, journalist Gwenda Blair, wrote that Trumps German ancestors changed the family name during the Thirty Years War.
Although Oliver mentioned that the Trump name became known as a symbol and indicator of luxury and wealth, the takeaway for viewers was "Donald Drumpf."
The Los Angeles Times reported what led to the trending hashtag is a customary practice for the show, where viewers are directed toward a website and encouraged to use a related hashtag.
The website is a generator that translates Trump on any webpage to Drumpf. The hashtag is #MakeDonaldDrumpfAgain.
So it looks like Drumpf may be a family name that was changed generations ago to Trump.
