BOSTON — A trail behind UMass Boston’s campus is popular for cyclists and runners throughout the day. It’s also where coyotes have been spotted.
“I come here every day, this is on my commuting route so I’m here in the morning and the evening,” said Nick Gray of Milton.
But now, those frequent visitors of the path will need to keep an eye out for some wildlife.
“Around here like where I run? That’s a little terrifying – with this fog especially,” said Kelly Hartlage of Boston.
These signs have been popping up along the waterfront pathway, warning people of coyote sightings.
“Before the signs went up, I would see one or two coyotes running around,” Hartlage said.
It’s an unsettling thought. But cyclist Nick Gray says he knows to keep on peddling, and avoids bringing his dogs on the path.
“It could certainly be frightening if they decided to become more aggressive,” Gray said.
Imagine coming face-to-face with a wild animal.
“They’re definitely around, people have seen them around campus, so hopefully I don’t see one today,” said Kathleen Kirles of Jamaica Plain.
“I’m pretty shocked, I didn’t even know coyotes came this way,” she said.
Some say although it’s unusual to spot wild animals in the city, it could be something we should just get used to.
“I think they’re just running out of areas to be in so I think the more we build around here the more we’re going to see them,” said Jerry Bannon of Boston.
And when we asked people what they would do if they see a coyote on the path, they say they’d probably just run in the other direction.
