LOWELL, Mass. — Police are investigating after a 19-year-old was hit by a car near the UMass Lowell campus then the driver fled the scene.

FOX25 has learned the teen, who was not a student at the school, was crossing the street near the Hawk's Nest dining hall around 2 a.m. Monday when a speeding driver in a grey or silver sedan hit her. Police said the vehicle will likely have front end damage, possibly even a broken windshield

“They were going across the street. I guess she kind of wandered into the street and a friend tried to pull her back. She got hit by the car drove away,” UMass Lowell freshman Marshall O’Leary said.

The woman has been treated and was released from the hospital.

Investigators told FOX25 they are waiting for surveillance video from campus shuttle buses and nearby buildings to see what they can discover.

Police believe the sedan should have damage to the front end. Anyone with information is asked to call the Lowell Police Department at (978) 937-3200.
