V Rings: Meet the new old boat in Rhode Island

NEWPORT, R.I. — Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was spotted earlier in the week on his new boat, VII Rings.

But in Newport, Rhode Island, they're still talking about V Rings.

"Oh, it's definitely a ‘thing’ in town right now.  Everyone wants to come down and see it,” Executive Director of Sail Newport Brad Read told FOX25.

What everyone wants to see is the boat that was recently owned by Belichick, before he upgraded.

Sail Newport is a charity whose mission it is to give everyone access to the water and to sailing. They rely on donations. And ‘V Rings’ was a big one.

“It was really nice of him to give it to a marine charity,” Read said.

But the boat they received once had another name.

"Originally it was named ‘III Rings,’” Read explained. "So it was the two Giants Super Bowls, plus the Patriots' Super Bowl.  Then they won two more, so it became Four and Five."

Then, Belichick decided to upgrade.

“A 32-footer that he has down in Florida. And he named that one VI Rings after the Seattle Super Bowl,” Read said.

The newest is called ‘VII rings.’

“We found a six-pack of Coors on the [V Rings],” said Read.

They also found a luggage tag.

“It's engraved, and on the front it says: Bill Belichick and on the back it says ‘New York Giants,’” Read said.

Read said they tried to return it, but the coach wouldn't hear of it.

It's now attached to the keys that start up one of the most interesting donations the charity has ever received.

“Coach Belichick has a lot of foundations that he works with and gives money to and supports, so we're just very proud to be one of those organizations that he's supporting,” said Read.
