BOSTON — A violent holiday weekend in Boston left five men dead and two in custody.
Brockton native, 27-year-old Kai Harris is charged in the death of Terrell White in an apparent drive-by shooting on Itasca Street in Mattapan. Police say house painters witnessed the Sunday morning shooting and the Youth Violence Strike Force was on patrol close by.
"The defendant has seven adult entries on his record which includes three convictions," said Assistant District Attorney Julie Higgins in court Tuesday.
Twelve hours before White's death, Boston Police say 21-year-old Kevin Williams shot and killed Jose Phinn Williams at the Fabian Gas Station on Washington Street Saturday night. Phinn Williams was just finishing his shift.
Kevin Williams' attorney says he wasn't even there.
"I believe and expect that the cell phone triangulation will show that Mr. Williams was nowhere near the scene of the shooting," said public defender Aviva Jeruchim.
Emotions ran high inside the courtroom Tuesday just steps away from where Jose would have been pumping gas.
"This neighborhood, this particular business I don't think is ever gonna be the same. He's a wonderful human being. It's just not fair," said relative Evelyn Vazquez.
The deaths bring the city's homicide to 44 and the community to a breaking point.
"Everyone from all facets of our community from law enforcement down to the person who just lives in the community to the clergy and beyond need to work together to curtail and eliminate the violence and homicide," said Rev. William Dickerson II, Bishop Greater Love Tabernacle.
Both Harris and Williams are due back in court.
