Two arrested after alleged theft, police chase in Westborough

WESTBOROUGH, Mass. — Two people were arrested after an alleged theft early Friday morning after a police chase and search in Westborough, according to Westborough Police.

Police sad there is a possibility of a third man involved, but he might still be on the run.

Edward Gale, 19, and Davon Smith, 21, are accused of attempting to break-in to several cars Thursday morning on Arch Street. But what the alleged thieves didn't know is that at one home -- they were being watched.

Police said they received a call from an Arch Street resident around 3 a.m., reporting that he saw people trying to break-in to the cars parked on his driveway. The man said he was at work, but was watching the activity remotely through a surveillance system.

An officer found two vehicles in the driveway with doors open and no one around, and another responding officer saw a grey vehicle rapidly approaching from the opposite direction on Glen Street.

According to police om scene, the grey car nearly caused a head-on collision with the officer's fully-marked police cruiser.

The incident soon turned into a full on chase.

The officer reversed his cruiser in an attempt to catch up to the fleeing car, which was traveling on Glen Street toward the Tufts University campus in Grafton.

The officer saw the vehicle traveling west on Route 30, and lost sight of the car as it went over a crest of a hill in the roadway near the campus.

When the officer arrived in the area where he last saw the car, he saw it had left the roadway and was on the campus's lawn with the passenger's side door open and no occupants in the car.

A police query of the car's registration revealed it had been reported stolen out of Worcester on April 9, and a multi-agency search was initiated to try to find the people who were in the car.

Smith was found around 7:17 a.m. on the campus and placed into custody without further incident, and Gale was found around 9:10 a.m. around Nelson Street in Grafton by Millbury Police.
