Billerica, Mass. — A Massachusetts State Police trooper is in the hospital with serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle on Route 3 during a traffic stop.
The trooper, who is assigned to the Concord barracks, was injured just south of Exit 29 in Billerica at the Chelmsford line, State Police said.

The trooper was conscious and alert when he was taken to Lahey Hospital. State Police told Boston 25 News he suffered upper and lower body injuries. The driver who hit the trooper pinned him up against the vehicle he had stopped, which is why there was damage to the side door of the dark SUV.
State Police said the trooper had stopped a car and was out of his cruiser when a passing vehicle struck him. Officials said the driver stopped at the scene.

Traffic along Route 3 was shut down for over an hour after the crash. Investigators reconstructed the accident in order to determine exactly what happened.
State Police told Boston 25 News the trooper has been with Mass State Police for 33 years, since 1985.

There is still no word on when the trooper will be released or if any charges will be filed against the driver.
