LOVINGTON, N.M. — A woman was convicted Friday of throwing her newborn baby into a dumpster in Lovington, New Mexico.
A jury on Friday found Alexis Avila guilty of attempted first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in great bodily harm, according to KOB-TV.
Prosecutors said that Avila threw her newborn baby into a dumpster in January 2022, KOAT reported.
During the trial, Avila testified that she did not remember the incident. KCBD reported that her psychologist diagnosed her with bipolar one disorder six months after the incident.
Avila pleaded not guilty last year, the news outlet reported.
The baby boy’s father also testified during the trial and said the child is doing well aside from a possible heart murmur and asthma, KOB reported.
The Lea County District Attorney said that Avila is facing up to 18 years for the attempted murder charge, which could be brought down to 12 years, according to the news outlet.
Avila is expected to be sentenced on May 1, according to KOB.
