The woman was taken to a hospital where she died.
No one else was injured.
The Flint Police Department requested the Michigan State Police to investigate.
The incident occurred during the Champions Parade, which honors the city’s athletic and community leaders. The parade was part of a weekend-long series of celebrations in honor of Juneteenth, MLive.com reported.
Preliminary investigation indicates the officer, who was working a traffic point for the Juneteenth Celebration Parade, was fired upon by the lone occupant of a vehicle who drove up to him at the traffic point. Upon taking fire, the officer returned fire, striking the suspect.
