Twitter bans ads that contradict science about climate change

Twitter announced that it will no longer permit advertisers on its site who deny the scientific consensus on climate change.

The social media giant, in a blog post on Earth Day, echoed a policy that is already in place at Google, according to The Associated Press.

“We believe that climate denialism shouldn’t be monetized on Twitter, and that misrepresentative ads shouldn’t detract from important conversations about the climate crisis,” Twitter wrote in a blog post.

The company cited the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s latest report in informing its decisions about which ads break the rules, according to The Washington Post. The U.N.-backed panel’s reports on the causes and effects of climate change are the basis for international negotiations for curbing climate change, according to the AP.

There was no evidence that the announcement would affect what Twitter users post on the site, the AP reported.

In 2021, Twitter announced that it would begin directing users to online hubs that contained “credible, authoritative information” on climate change, the Post reported.

Also last year, Google announced a move to ban advertisements that contradict the scientific consensus on climate change, according to the newspaper. Facebook’s parent company, Meta, also launched a Climate Science Center to give users a go-to place to find accurate information on climate change.
