Lenny Von Dohlen, known for his role as Harold Smith on the television series “Twin Peaks,” died Tuesday, his agent and sister said. He was 63.
The actor died at his Los Angeles home after a long illness, his longtime manager, Steven J. Wolfe, confirmed to Variety.
Von Dohlen’s sister, Catherine Van Dohlen, shared the news of her brother’s death in a Facebook post on Friday.
“The world lost a magnificent man on July 5,” she wrote. “Brother Len was passionate about everything and everyone. He was always leading; whether it be riveting conversation, an artistic creation or a trip to new places.
“He loved a good laugh. He continues on his spiritual journey. Living life full in his memory.”
On the second season of “Twin Peaks” in 1990 and in the 1992 prequel film “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me,” Lenny Von Dohlen played the agoraphobic, orchid-growing Harold Smith, who refused to leave his house, Variety reported.
His first television role came on “Kent State” in 1981, People reported.
Von Dohlen made his film debut in 1983′s “Tender Mercies” and then got his big break in the 1984 film “Electric Dreams,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
He also played the title role in “Billy Galvin,” starring opposite Karl Malden, the entertainment news website reported.
Van Dohlen also had roles in “Under the Biltmore Clock,” “Blind Vision,” “Home Alone III,” “Jennifer 8″ and “Leaving Normal,” according to IMDB.com.
His other credits on television included roles on “Picket Fences,” “Chicago Hope,” “The Lazarus Man,” “The Pretender,” “CSI: Miami” and “Don’t Touch,” People reported. He also had guest-starring roles in “Miami Vice,” “thirtysomething,” “The Equalizer” and “The Young Riders,” according to the magazine.
Born in Augusta, Georgia, and raised in Texas, Van Dohlen graduated from the University of Texas and majored in drama at Loretto Heights College, according to IMDb.com.
He is survived by his partner, playwright James Still; his mother, Gay Von Dohlen; and siblings Mary Gay, Catherine and John David, as well as his daughter, Hazel, Entertainment Tonight reported.
