Police: 3 dead, 5 injured in shooting near New Mexico motorcycle rally

RED RIVER, N.M. — Three people were killed and five others were injured on Saturday after shots were fired at a motorcycle rally in New Mexico, authorities said.

Update 2:46 p.m. EDT May 28: In a news release, New Mexico State Police said around 5 p.m. gunshots were reported near Main Street in Red River. Once officers arrived at the scene, they found two dead people and six injured. Investigators believe that there was some kind of confrontation between OMG members.

Police say five of the six injured were taken to hospitals in the area. The sixth injured person was airlifted to a hospital in Denver, Colorado, police say. One of the five taken to a local hospital died from their injuries.

The eight killed and injured were identified as OMG members, according to police. The three dead were identified as Anthony Silva, 26; Randy Sanchez, 46; and Damian Breaux, 46.

One person has been arrested in connection and they were identified as Jacob David Castillo, 30. Castillo has been charged with an “open count of murder.” Police say Castillo was injured in the incident.

Another one of the injured was arrested for cocaine possession. Police identified him as Christopher Garcia, 41.

Update 9:40 a.m. EDT May 28: New Mexico State Police released an update Sunday morning on Twitter and confirmed that three people have died in the shooting near the motorcycle rally. Police also confirmed that five people were injured and are receiving medical attention.

No information has been released about a possible suspect.

Original story: At least three gunshot victims were taken to Holy Cross Medical Center in Taos, the Taos News reported. The incident brought the 41st Annual Red River Memorial Day Motorcycle Rally to an early end, according to the newspaper. According to the Albuquerque Journal, the shooting occurred at a bar.

The Taos County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police were at the scene, KOAT-TV reported. The New Mexico State Police said that the scene “is active” but did not provide specifics.

Taos County Undersheriff Jerry Hogrefe confirmed to the television station that a shooting occurred in Red River.

A dispatcher with the Red River Marshal’s Office said the shooting happened sometime before 6:30 p.m. MDT at the Motherlode Saloon in Red River, the Journal reported.

It was unclear whether the shooting was related to the motorcycle rally.

A Taos Police Officer at the hospital the Taos News that he did not know how many victims were transported there, but added that “from what we’re hearing it’s more than three.”
