Two women, identified as Tracie and Pippa, heard one of the kittens as they were walking a dog Wednesday morning in Gluckstadt. One of the women, who fosters animals for ARF, sent a text message to the organization to let them know about the discovery.

Equipped with gloves, a crowbar, food and towels, Pippa, Tracie and ARF officials pulled back the manhole cover to get to the kittens. They quickly discovered that the storm drain was 12 feet below street level, according to ARF.

“After discussing the situation at hand, whilst the kittens gave us their opinion, we decided to try and find a ladder to get down there to where they were,” officials with the organization said in a social media post.

After knocking on doors, the group found a ladder, though it turned out to be too wide to fit into the manhole. They knocked on doors again and managed to find a home with an extension ladder, according to ARF.

Pippa was able to get down to the cats, although one immediately rolled off the storm drain culvert “and went plop into the water,” ARF said. The kitten ran down the drain toward the east, but returned after Pippa decided to go down the tube toward the cat, according to ARF.

Both cats were brought back to the surface, where they were given flea medication, a wormer, food and dry bedding.
