Retired Chicago firefighter, 77, fatally shoots assailant, police say

CHICAGO — A retired Chicago Fire Department captain fatally shot a man who attempted to rob him Saturday, authorities said.

The 77-year-old man, whose name has not been released, retired from the department about 15 years ago and has a valid firearm owner’s identification card and concealed carry license, the Chicago Tribune reported.

According to police, the victim was standing in the open garage of a home in the Chicago neighborhood of Burnside when a vehicle pulled up in the alley, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. The man demanded the victim’s belongings, according to Chicago police and Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

The victim then shot the would-be robber, fatally striking him in the head and chest, WLS-TV reported.

The Chicago Fire Department confirmed that the victim is a retired firefighter, according to WFLD.

The would-be robber, whose identity also was not released, died at the scene, according to the Tribune. The victim was not injured, the newspaper reported.

Police said an investigation is ongoing.
