Hyundai announced it is recalling more than 44,000 SUVs due to a fire risk even when the vehicles’ engines are turned off, and is advising its owners to park away from buildings and other cars.
According to a recall posted to National Transportation Safety Board on Tuesday, the South Korean auto manufacturer said the recall applies to the company’s 2018 Santa Fe Sport, The Washington Post reported.
The increased fire risk is due to a problem with the vehicle’s anti-lock brake computers that can malfunction and develop an electrical short, MLive reported. When that happens, it can lead to too much electricity in the computer.
That increases the risk of “fire while parked or driving,” according to the NTSB recall report.
Dealers will replace the faulty fuse, and owners will be notified by mail beginning Dec. 26, The Associated Press reported. Owners can contact Hyundai’s customer service line at 855-371-9460 to coordinate repairs, according to the Post. The reference recall number is 237.
“Out of an abundance of caution, Hyundai recommends parking these vehicles outside and away from structures until the recall remedy is completed,” Hyundai spokesman Ira Gabriel said in a statement. “All owners of the subject vehicles will be notified by first class mail with instructions to bring their vehicles to the nearest Hyundai dealership for replacement of the ABS module fuse.”
