Hand sanitizer is being recalled after U.S. Food and Drug Administration testing found the presence of methanol.
The voluntary recall by Jarman’s Midwest Cleaning System’s Inc. covers two products.
Consumers that have the recalled products – Alcohol Antiseptic 80% Topical Solution Hand Sanitizer Non-sterile Solution and Isopropyl Alcohol Antiseptic 75% Topical Solution Hand Sanitizer Non-sterile Solution – should stop using it and dispose of it in accordance with local ordinances, according to the company.
Substantial methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache blurred vision, coma, seizures, permanent blindness, permanent damage to the central nervous system, or death, according to the FDA news release.
The FDA maintains a list of hand sanitizers it warns consumers not to use, most of them because of methanol concerns.
Anyone using the product on their hands risk methanol exposure, but young children who accidentally ingest these products or anyone who drinks the products as an alcohol substitute are most at risk for methanol poisoning.
The products being recalled are packaged in 1-gallon clear or white plastic bottles.
According to Jarman’s, the company has not received any reports of adverse events related to these products.
