Prince Harry, Prince William release new statements concerning grandfather Prince Philip’s death

As the U.K. continues to mourn the passing of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, two of his grandsons have released new statements about their grandfather’s death and legacy.

Prince Harry, who traveled to the U.K. for the funeral said he “was a man of service, honour and great humour. He was authentically himself, with a seriously sharp wit, and could hold the attention of any room due to his charm — and also because you never knew what he might say next.”

The message was shared by a reporter and producer who covers the royal family for a variety of news outlets.

He added that while Prince Philip may have been a duke for his home country, “He was my grandpa: master of the barbecue, legend of banter, and cheeky right ‘til the end.”

He also wrote that his grandfather would “say to all of us, beer in hand, ‘Oh do get on with it!’”

Prince Harry traveled to be with his family alone, as his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, is pregnant and was advised to stay in California. She remained home with their son Archie.

Harry was met at Heathrow Airport Sunday and was taken to Windsor. He will stay at Frogmore Cottage while in quarantine, following COVID-19 protocols, Hello! magazine and other media outlets reported.

Prince William also took a moment to remember his grandfather, saying, “I feel lucky to have not just his example to guide me, but his enduring presence into my own adult life — both through good times and the hardest days. I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her. I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humor!”

The Duke of Cambridge also released a photo of Prince Philip riding in a carriage with Prince George that was taken by the Duchess of Cambridge.

Prince Philip died last week at the age of 99, after 73 years of marriage to Queen Elizabeth II. His funeral will be held Saturday. There will be no public viewing and the number of mourners permitted to attend is limited to 30.
