CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — Investigators believe a North Carolina father opened fire on his girlfriend and their toddler son, killing the boy, before turning the gun on himself in the family’s Caldwell County home.

According to WSOC-TV, the incident occurred Friday night at a home on Pope Lane near Lenoir. Caldwell County deputies told the news outlet that Michael Summerow shot his girlfriend in the arm before fatally shooting the couple’s 2-year-old son, Elijah. Detectives believe that Summerow then fired the weapon at himself, WSOC reported.
The child’s mother is expected to recover from her injuries, according to WSOC. Summerow remains hospitalized but is also expected to survive, deputies said.

Deputies have not yet filed charges against Summerow, WSOC reported.
