In its announcement, the National Portrait Gallery said its honorees for 2022 “embody creativity, individuality, excellence, and service to the people of our country.” José Andrés, Clive Davis, Ava DuVernay, Marian Wright Edelman, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Serena Williams and Venus Williams were all chosen to be the 2022 honorees.

“The Portrait of a Nation award is an expression of gratitude for the leaders in our country who have made a difference and continue to advocate for a better future. These honorees are innovators in their respective disciplines and advocates for social causes who use their voices to care for and lift up others,” Kim Sajet, director of the National Portrait Gallery, told WJLA.

Dr. Fauci told The Washington Post he was overwhelmed by the honor: “It is one of the most humbling of all the recognition that I’ve gotten. I’ve lived in Washington the last 50 years and the Smithsonian Portrait Gallery is an iconic place in my mind. It makes me feel humbled and almost embarrassed to be in the same building with the people whose portraits are there.”

The awards will be presented on Nov. 12, and each honoree’s portrait will be displayed in the museum beginning Nov. 10, The Washington Post reported.
