HAZELHURST, Miss. — A police officer in Mississippi responded to a call, only to find her own son dead in the middle of the street.
Officer Laquandia Cooley was called to a shooting in Hazelhurst, Mississippi, early Sunday morning, and found her 20-year-old son, Charles Stewart, dead from a gunshot wound in the street, WLBT reported. “We initially responded to the call not knowing, when I made it over there, the person was going to be my son that was laying there,” Cooley told WLBT.
The chief of the Hazelhurst police department said the case would be handled by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation because it involves an officer’s family, NBC News reported.
Stewart’s father told WLBT his son was a good person, and that the family was trying to cope day to day.
