Man caught with nearly 83 pounds of marijuana during traffic stop, police say

MARION, Ill. — A Mississippi man is accused of driving through southern Illinois with nearly 83 pounds of marijuana in his vehicle, authorities said.

William Davis, 44, of Lexington, was arrested Monday and charged with the manufacture/delivery of less than 5,000 grams of cannabis, trafficking in less than 5,000 grams of cannabis, driving with a revoked or suspended license and speeding in a construction zone, WPSD-TV reported.

Police said they confiscated 82.9 pounds of marijuana.

“If you were curious how much cannabis you can transport in your car, the amount is NOT 82 pounds,” the Marion Police Department wrote in a Facebook post on Monday.

Marijuana is legal for adults 21 and older in Illinois, but the limit an individual can legally possess is 30 grams for residents and 15 grams for non-residents, according to WPSD.

People who carry marijuana must have the drug sealed in odor-proof, child-proof containers authorized by a dispensary, according to KFVS-TV.

Police said that officers stopped Davis when he was allegedly speeding in a construction zone on a southbound lane of Interstate 57, the television station reported.

Officers were speaking with Davis when they said they noticed three large bags of marijuana in the back seat of his vehicle, according to WPSD.

Police said they also found 30 bottles of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) syrup and 40 vape pens, KFVS reported.
