According to officials with the New Orleans Police Department, Hollis Carter, 21, confessed to killing Caleb Johnson and his stepsister Breyiana Brown, two weeks before the younger Johnson was slated to graduate high school, WWL-TV reported.

John Fuller, Carter’s attorney, confirmed to WDSU that his client was en route to court Wednesday morning for pretrial motions in the murder case against him when he was shot inside his vehicle.

According to WWL-TV, 46-year-old Bokio Johnson was arrested Thursday in connection with the day-earlier shooting that left Carter dead and his mother critically wounded. The shooting occurred five days before the anniversary of Caleb Johnson’s death.

Surveillance video showed a dark Ford F-150 following closely behind Hollis’ vehicle before its driver – since identified as Bokio Johnson – stopped at an intersection, rolled down the pickup truck’s window and fired shots into Carter’s vehicle before driving away, WDSU reported.

Court records indicated that Carter’s family identified the truck in the video as Bokio Johnson’s, the TV station reported.

Carter, who had been out on bond, died of a gunshot wound to the head, WWL-TV reported.

Fuller maintained his client’s innocence, stating Friday that Carter provided a false confession in the slayings of Caleb Johnson and Breyiana Brown because he feared the actual gunman, the TV station reported.
