Earlier this week, his publicist said that the former host of “Family Feud” had been diagnosed with a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and was resting comfortably.
A spokesperson for a Las Vegas hospital had confirmed Anderson had been receiving cancer treatment, The Associated Press reported Tuesday.
His publicist confirmed Anderson’s death to Variety Friday. Glenn Schwartz told the AP that Anderson died of complications from cancer.
Anderson got his big break in 1984 when he performed on “The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson.”
He was featured on Showtime in 1987 and made regular television appearances on other late-night shows.
Anderson also appeared in films such as “Coming to America” in 1988, a role he reprised in 2021′s “Coming 2 America,” Variety reported.
He headlined on the Fox animated series “Life with Louie,” which was based on his life growing up in Saint Paul, Minnesota as part of a family of 11 children, and ran from 1995 to 1998. The show helped him win two Daytime Emmy awards for a performer in an animated program, as he voiced an 8-year-old version of himself. He also appeared on CBS on “The Louie Show,” which was canceled after six episodes.
Anderson hosted “Family Feud” from 1999 through 2002 as the first host of the game show’s third revival, Variety reported.
Most recently, he appeared on the FX comedy series “Baskets,” which premiered in 2016 and ran through 2019, co-starring Zach Galifianakis. Anderson played Galifanakis’ character’s mother for the show’s run and won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2016. He was also nominated in 2017 and 2018.
