Introducing Pixy, Snapchat’s selfie drone

Snap, Snapchat’s parent company, is delving further into hardware that can be used to take the perfect picture.

The company introduced the drone selfie camera it calls Pixy, The New York Times reported.

It will help people snap a selfie without the need of a selfie stick.

The flying camera is pocket size and is used by dialing up a flight mode. The button is on the camera’s housing, CNBC reported.

Pixy will fly for a minute, taking photos and videos that are downloaded to the owner’s private Snapchat drive before it lands in the user’s hand.

The Pixy stores up to 100 videos or 1,000 photos, CNBC reported.

Snap’s chief executive Evan Spiegel said the Pixy gives users a “new perspective” and “allows you to have fun and go hang out with your family and create videos all together,” the Times reported.

This isn’t the first time Snap has developed hardware to help document users’ surroundings.

The company launched Spectacles in 2016 which held embedded cameras and had augmented reality features, but the glasses underperformed. They were relaunched in 2021 with augmented reality filters overlaying the physical world.

Pixy will retail for $229.99 for the camera, bumper, strap, charger and battery, CNBC reported. Additional batteries can be purchased for $19.99. A charger runs $49.99, the Times reported.

Snapchat has 600 million monthly active users and more than 330 million daily active users, CNBC reported.
