The shooting occurred at about 2 p.m. EDT, according to Terre Haute Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Ryan Adamson.

Update 12:08 a.m. July 8: Officials announced that Detective Greg Ferency, a 30-year veteran of the Terre Haute Police Department, died when he was ambushed and fatally shot outside a federal office building near the Vigo County Courthouse, the Tribune-Star of Terre Haute reported.

Ferency joined the Terre Haute Police Department on May 14, 1991, and had been an FBI federal task force office since 2010, the newspaper reported.

The detective was known for investigations into illegal drugs and criminal networks, and also was also a leader in human trafficking investigations, the Tribune-Star reported.

A graduate of Terre Haute South Vigo High School and Indiana State University, Ferency wrote “NARC Ops: A Look Inside Drug Enforcement” in 2003.

Ferency is the third police officer to be killed while on duty in the Wabash Valley in the last 10 years, WTWO reported.

The previous officers were Brent Long in 2011 and Rob Pitts in 2018, the television station reported.

“I just don’t, I don’t understand,” Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter told WTWO. “I don’t know when this is going to stop.” “Greg Ferency was a good man, a 30-year member of Terre Haute Police Department. He worked in this community for many, many, many years. It’s a sad day for this community for and the Terre Haute Police Department.”

Original report: The officer, whose name has not been released pending notification of family, was shot at the federal office building behind the Vigo County Courthouse, the Tribune-Star of Terre Haute reported.

“We have unfortunately had an officer shot in the line of duty,” Adamson tweeted. “Our officer has passed away. We will release more information as the case allows.”

Adamson said the investigation is ongoing, and very minimal information is being released, the Tribune-Star reported.

Adamson did not release any information about the gunman, according to the newspaper.

Authorities confirmed that the alleged gunman is in custody and is currently undergoing surgery at an area hospital, WTWO reported. The detained person was driving a gold or silver Ford F-150 truck with rear-end damage, the television station reported.
