The company recently announced that if a shopper wants to buy a chest of drawers and other items, they realize that the item must be attached to the wall and give their name and email to IKEA before the sale can be finalized.

The move comes after multiple reports of chests of drawers that were not attached to the walls tipping over.

Customers will have to register on their cell phones using www.ikea-usa.com/safe. The site will then send a reminder to the owner to attach the item to a wall. They will also get an email that shows that they did register prior to purchase that must be shown to an IKEA employee to get access to a gated self-service aisle to pick up the furniture cartons, the company said.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said more than 11,300 children under the age of 18 were hurt in tip-over accidents from 2017 through 2019 and that there were 469 deaths involving children between the ages of 1 month and 14 years old. Overall there were 25,500 injuries that happened in tip-over accidents that required emergency department visits with 19,900 involving furniture, a television and furniture, or appliance and furniture, the CPSC reported.
