Georgia man accused of shooting at McDonald’s employee in drive-thru

JEFFERSON, Ga. — A Georgia man is accused of shooting a McDonald’s employee in a drive-thru after an argument broke out with another employee, authorities said.

Devonte Watts, 26, of Gainesville, was charged with one count of aggravated battery, two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and discharge of firearms within 50 yards of a highway, according to Jackson County Sheriff’s Office online booking records. The Jefferson Police Department listed Watts’ address as Stone Mountain, according to a Facebook post.

All of the charges are felonies.

Officers with the Jefferson Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at the McDonald’s on U.S. 129 at around 11 p.m. EDT Thursday, WSB-TV reported.

According to a news release by the Jefferson police, witnesses told officers that Watts drove up to the drive-thru and ordered food. He then got into an argument with an employee and allegedly spat at the employee through the pickup window.

The argument continued and the employee went outside to the drive-thru to confront the customer, police said. As Watts drove away, he allegedly fired a shot toward the employee, the news release stated.

The bullet hit a second employee, who had come outside from the restaurant to try to calm the situation.

The injured employee was taken to an area hospital and treated for a non-life-threatening injury, according to the news release.

Police announced Friday evening that Watts had been arrested and charged, WSB reported.
