PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — A shooting at a South Florida apartment complex on Wednesday involved a naked man and a person who called 911 to report that he had pulled the trigger, authorities said.
The victim, who was shot while naked in public, is in critical condition, according to the Pembroke Pines Police Department. The alleged shooter is in custody, the Sun-Sentinel reported.
The incident occurred at about 8:45 a.m. outside the Sunshine Garden Apartments in Pembroke Pines, the newspaper reported.
Police reported receiving several 911 calls, and when officers arrived at the scene they found a naked man on the ground with a gunshot wound, the Miami Herald reported. While the victim was being transported to an area hospital, police received another 911 call, the newspaper reported.
The caller identified himself as the gunman, police said. He added that he had gotten into a confrontation with the man in the atrium of the apartment complex, the Herald reported.
“He wanted to surrender himself to police,” Pembroke Pines police Maj. Al Xiques told the Sun-Sentinel. “He was detained by police and is being questioned.”
Fifteen minutes before the shooting, apartment resident Destiny Williams said the naked man knocked at her door.
“He was knocking on doors and when you open it he was like, ‘You want some of this?’ pointing to his private area,” Williams told the Sun-Sentinel. “That was crazy.”
The identities of the naked man and the alleged shooter were not disclosed Wednesday, the newspaper reported.
Boris Ovrugsky, the owner of the apartment complex, said the man did not live there.
“I wasn’t present there,” Ovrugsky told the Sun-Sentinel. “I had a detective call me and tell me that somebody was running around naked, not from the community, but from outside, and someone from the apartments shot him.”
“I’ve never seen him before,” Williams told the newspaper. “He doesn’t live here. I don’t know why the hell he’d be running around with no clothes on.”
The motive for the shooting, and why the victim was naked, has not yet been determined, police said.
