Coronavirus: Total US COVID-19 cases top 70 million

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed 70 million on Friday, with more than 18 million new coronavirus infections reported during the past 28 days.

By late Saturday afternoon, U.S. COVID-19 cases totaled 70,466,436, including nearly 295,000 cases reported in the 24 hours ended at 9 p.m., Meanwhile, the nationwide death toll hit 865,310 by Saturday night, according to a Johns Hopkins University tally.

California remains the hardest-hit U.S. state with nearly 7.7 million cumulative COVID-19 cases, followed closely by Texas with nearly 6 million cases, Florida with more than 5.3 million cases and New York with nearly 4.7 million cases. Meanwhile, seven other states have confirmed at least 2 million cases, including Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan and New Jersey.

The following 14 other states have confirmed at least 1 million cases:

· Arizona: More than 1.7 million cases, resulting in more than 25,000 deaths.

· Tennessee: Nearly 1.7 million cases, resulting in nearly 22,000 deaths.

· Massachusetts: More than 1.5 million cases, resulting in more than 21,000 deaths.

· Indiana: More than 1.5 million cases, resulting in nearly 21,000 deaths.

· Virginia: Nearly 1.5 million cases, resulting in nearly 16,000 deaths.

· Wisconsin: More than 1.4 million cases, resulting in nearly 12,000 deaths.

· South Carolina: Nearly 1.3 million cases, resulting in more than 15,000 deaths.

· Missouri: Nearly 1.3 million cases, resulting in more than 17,000 deaths.

· Minnesota: More than 1.2 million cases, resulting in more than 11,000 deaths.

· Colorado: Nearly 1.2 million cases, resulting in nearly 11,000 deaths.

· Washington: Nearly 1.2 million cases, resulting in more than 10,000 deaths.

· Alabama: More than 1.1 million cases, resulting in nearly 17,000 deaths.

· Louisiana: Nearly 1.1 million cases, resulting in more than 15,000 deaths.

· Kentucky: Nearly 1.1 million cases, resulting in nearly 13,000 deaths.

Ten other states have reported at least half a million cases, including Maryland, Oklahoma, Utah, Arkansas, Iowa, Mississippi, Kansas, Nevada and Oregon.
