Coronavirus: California hospital employees receive $1M from anonymous donor

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — A California hospital received a big boost from an anonymous donor, who sent a note of gratitude and a $1 million donation, officials confirmed Monday.

According to The Associated Press, the donation was sent to employees at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz.

"Thank you for standing up [and staying up!] to care for our community. This human kindness is what makes you heroic,” the donor wrote in the letter.

The donation, made through the Dominican Hospital Foundation, will be distributed entirely between hospital employees, according to The Hill.

“We cannot adequately express the depth of our gratitude for this gracious, selfless gift,” Dominican Hospital President Nanette Mickiewicz said in a statement. “We are incredibly proud of the work our hospital family is doing in the face of such an unprecedented situation. This generous donation is a testament to their clinical excellence, their tireless dedication and, most of all, their profound humanity."

According to the hospital, the donor is a resident of Santa Cruz County and a “longtime supporter” who asked for anonymity.

The gift will benefit the nurses, laboratory technicians, cleaning staff, medical records personnel, security guards and mailroom workers who have worked at the hospital for at least a year, according to the AP.

Full-time staff will receive $800, while part-timers will get a $600 check, the news service reported.

According to The Hill, nursing supervisor Amy Loudon said she was amazed at the donor’s generosity.

“There are so many people who keep the hospital running,” Loudon told the AP. “Nurses and doctors are getting the praise, but we couldn’t do it without the staff who clean the floors, deliver supplies, fix machines, everything. It’s a team, and I’m glad the whole team is getting a thank you."
