Britney Spears’ father files to end court conservatorship

LOS ANGELES — Britney Spears’ father filed a petition on Tuesday to end his daughter’s conservatorship, effectively relinquishing 13 years of control over the singer’s finances and life.

According to the petition, filed by James “Jamie” Spears to Los Angeles Superior Court and viewed by NBC News, Britney Spears is “entitled to have this Court now seriously consider whether this conservatorship is no longer required.”

A petition from Britney Spears’ attorney to remove Jamie Spears was to be heard at the next hearing in the case, slated for Sept. 29.

Specifically, Jamie Spears’ filing stated that Britney Spears’ circumstances have changed “to such an extent that grounds for establishment of a conservatorship may no longer exist,” the network reported.

Judge Brenda Penny, who oversees the case, will need to approve the move.

“As Mr. Spears has said again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter,” the document stated. “If Ms. Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should get that chance.”

Jamie Spears’ petition also argued that the probate code does not require Britney Spears to undergo a new psychological evaluation in order to terminate the guardianship, a requirement with which the 39-year-old singer has told the court she refused to comply if ordered.

Jamie Spears stated his intentions in an Aug. 12 filing to step down as conservator of his daughter’s finances, but he offered no timetable for doing so. He had previously surrendered control over the pop icon’s life decisions in 2019.
