Atlanta Braves OF Marcell Ozuna released from jail after arrest on domestic violence charge

ATLANTA — Atlanta Braves outfielder Marcell Ozuna was arrested Saturday on charges of domestic violence, authorities said.

Updated 11:34 p.m. May 31: Ozuna was released from jail Monday on $20,000 bond, WSB-TV reported.

As part of the the conditions of his release, Ozuna is not allowed to possess any weapons or have contact with his wife.

Original report: Ozuna, 30, was faces charges of aggravated assault strangulation, and battery-family violence, a misdemeanor, according to Fulton County Sheriff’s Office online booking records.

Ozuna was booked by the Sandy Springs Police Department, records show.

According to a news release from the Sandy Springs Police Department, officers received a 911 call at 12:26 p.m. EDT regarding an assault.

Officers said they heard screaming coming from inside a residence and entered through the front door. According to the release, officers said they witnessed Ozuna grabbing the victim by the next and throwing her against a wall.

Officers said that a preliminary investigation revealed that the incident was domestic-related between Ozuna and his wife, Genesis Ozuna, according to the news release.

Marcell Ozuna, a nine-year major league veteran, has been on Atlanta’s roster since 2020. Ozuna has been on the injured list with broken fingers in his left hand and did not accompany the Braves to New York, according to Sports Illustrated.

“The Braves fully support Major League Baseball’s policy on domestic violence, which stresses to the fullest that our society cannot and will not tolerate violence in any form,” the team said in a statement.

MLB is expected to open an investigation into the matter, ESPN reported. Ozuna could face a suspension in accordance with the league’s domestic violence abuse policy.

Genesis Ozuna, was arrested on a domestic violence charge in Miami a year ago, Sports Illustrated reported. Genesis Ozuna allegedly threw a soap dish at her husband that resulted in facial laceration, the magazine reported.

During the shortened 2020 season, Marcell Ozuna led the National League in home runs with 18 and drove in a league-leading 56 runs. He batted .338 and led Atlanta to the National League East title.

The Braves re-signed Ozuna in February to a four-year, $65 million deal with a fifth-year option worth $16 million and a $1 million buyout, ESPN reported.

According to online booking records, Marcell Ozuna remains in the Fulton County Jail.
