According to WHIO, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton agents and the Germantown police helped remove a horse, two cows, three goats, seven sheep, five rabbits, seven peacocks, a duck, two guinea fowls, 11 chickens and three geese. HSGD agents found that the animals were neglected and the property had multiple maintenance violations.

In a news release, HSGD said that the water was found to be more “sludge than anything suitable for drinking.”

“It is always a difficult day for our team to see animals in such poor and neglectful conditions,” said Brian Weltge, President & CEO of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, in a news release. “However, our team is well trained and responded quickly to obtain a warrant and remove the animals from this horrible situation so that we could begin to immediately address their veterinary needs and provide them with the food, shelter and medical care they need to rehabilitate.”

HSGD said that most of the animals were found to be underweight and had other health issues. The animals were placed into foster homes by HSGD, where they are getting medical attention and care.

According to WHIO, the HSGD agents recently appeared in court regarding the removal of the animals from the farm. The defendants pleaded guilty to animal cruelty. Both defendants were sentenced to the maximum under Ohio law and have been granted probation not to exceed five years. The Miamisburg Municipal Court Probation Department and HSGD will be monitoring the defendants during probation, according to WHIO.

“We are so grateful for the people who reported this situation,” said Weltge, in a news release. “Our organization can’t be everywhere at once so we rely on the community to be our eyes and ears. It is because of your diligence that we were able to remove these animals and give them the help they need.”
