According to the Michigan State Police, the crash occurred on Interstate 94 in Marengo Township, WWMT-TV reported. Troopers said the driver of a Ford pickup truck was driving eastbound on a westbound lane when it crashed into a minivan, according to the television station.

The driver of the pickup, a 42-year-old man from Massachusetts, was pronounced dead at the scene, WXMI-TV reported.

The driver of the minivan, a 46-year-old man from Indiana, and the 4-year-old, who was a passenger, also were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the television station.

Four other passengers in the minivan -- an adult and three children -- were taken to an area hospital and were treated for injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening, the Battle Creek Enquirer reported.

It was unclear whether the driver of the pickup was wearing a seatbelt, WWMT reported. The driver and adult passenger in the minivan were wearing seatbelts, but the children were not in child safety seats or wearing seatbelts, troopers said.

The crash remains under investigation, according to the Enquirer.

“Over the years and throughout the state, we’ve implemented measures to prevent wrong-way drivers and we will continue to do so,” John Richard, a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Transportation, said in a statement. “The only common factor with these types of crashes is that the driver has been impaired in some way.”

It was unclear whether alcohol or drugs were involved in Monday’s crash.

Marengo Township is about 100 miles west of Detroit and about 20 miles east of Battle Creek.
