2 killed in plane crash near Golden Gate Bridge

SAN FRANCISCO — Two people were killed on Friday when a small plane crashed on a ridge near San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, authorities said.

An emergency beacon for a small plane was activated at about 2 p.m. PDT Friday, the Golden Gate National Park Service tweeted.

According to a news release from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, a fixed-wing, single-engine Vans RV-10 personal aircraft crashed into the hillside of the Marin Headlands near Slackers Hill, which is located northwest of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The sheriff’s office said searching for the plane was hampered by “heavy fog and condensation,” but the aircraft was located shortly after 2 p.m. EDT.

The two people in the aircraft were pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office said the names of the two victims would not be released until Monday, but a parent of a student at Jesuit High School in Arden Arcade near Sacramento was identified as one of the deceased, The Sacramento Bee reported.

Jennifer Fox died alongside her friend in the crash, according to an email sent to parents by Jesuit officials, the newspaper reported.

“Jennifer and her friend died in a plane crash on Friday afternoon,” the statement read. “With hearts still heavy from the tragic loss of our student earlier this week, we are aware that many in our community, especially the sophomore class at Jesuit and the senior class at St. Francis, will be particularly impacted by this additional loss and in need of loving support.”

“This is an enormous loss to our family and our entire close-knit community,” Fox’s family said in a statement to KPIX-TV.
