SAN ANTONIO — A sheriff's deputy in southern Texas is accused of making a drug deal while in uniform, KSAT reported.
Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar announced at a news conference that Cpl. Armando Trevino, 30, a five-year veteran of the department, was arrested on charges of bribery, possession of fewer than 28 grams of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.
Authorities set up surveillance at a gas station in San Antonio and said they observed Trevino obtain drugs from 33-year-old Rudy de la Cruz, KTSA reported.
De La Cruz is facing the same charges as Trevino, the San Antonio Express-News reported.
Salazar said Trevino was wearing his uniform at the time of the exchange, since he was preparing to begin his shift, the television station reported.
"The surveillance team observed a narcotics transaction taking place and they swooped in and placed both under arrest," Salazar said during the news conference. "The deputy was in uniform at the time of his arrest and he had a weapon present, although he is not a peace officer.
“It was pretty clear to everybody that he was on his way to work to smuggle these drugs into the Bexar County Jail, but we placed him under arrest before that could be completed."
According to Salazar, Trevino has been smuggling drugs into the Bexar County Jail for several years, the Express-News reported.
Trevino is the eighth official with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office arrested this year, KSAT reported.
