HIGHLANDS COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida man died after being bitten more than 100 times by a pack of dogs, police said.
Melvin Olds Jr., 45, was found dead around noon Thursday in a wooded area behind a house near Lake Placid, according to investigators.
An autopsy confirmed there were no other wounds on Olds other than the dog bites. A toxicology report with a final cause of death will be available in several weeks.
Animal Services officers set traps and caught six stray dogs with jaws that fit the bite sizes. Investigators will compare DNA to be sure if the dogs are those involved.
"While we may have the dogs that were responsible for this horrible tragedy, we won't know for sure for a while," Sheriff Paul Blackman said in a statement. "I want to encourage residents of Highway Park and the surrounding area to be on the lookout for any loose dogs, especially those that seem aggressive. We don't want anyone else to be injured."
