Transgender third-grader switches schools, will be addressed as female

NASHUA, N.H. (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – A transgender student within the Nashua School District has enrolled at a new elementary school and will be addressed as a female after reportedly being discriminated against at a previous school.

The Nashua School District reached a settlement agreement with the family in May after addressing complaints from earlier in the 2011-2012 school year, reports The Nashua Telegraph.

According to the settlement, the student's transgender status is confidential medical information, and related information can only be shared with "appropriate and necessary" staff, and not other students or their families unless authorized by the girl's mother in writing.

The student will be treated the same as every other female student and will also be allowed to use the same restrooms as the other girls in the class which was one of the issues that raised concerns at the student's previous school, the newspaper reports.

The school district's policies don't necessarily address the transgender issue; however, the district does not tolerate discrimination, harassment, or bullying of or by students and staff.
