One worker is dead and two others were injured after a "construction accident" in Cambridge, according to the Cambridge Fire Department.

The department tweeted out the news around 3:10 p.m. Thursday afternoon, saying crews were on scene at 120 Vassar Street for the incident.

Cambridge Fire said three workers were injured in the incident, with one of the workers injured critically. They were taken to medical facilities, and the scene was secured.

“Three workers were injured when debris fell from the third story onto them," Cambridge Assistant Fire Chief Paul Sheehan said. "They were at ground level.”

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan later confirmed around 7:36 p.m. that one of the workers, a 41-year-old man from Taunton, had died after the apparent industrial incident. Ryan confirmed the two others were dealing with injuries that weren't deemed life-threatening.

The man worked for Walsh Brothers, Inc., who identified the victim as Anthony Costa, Jr.

"“Three employees of Walsh Brothers, Inc., were injured," the statement read. "One of our employees, Anthony Costa, Jr., a Labor Foreman, was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries.”

OSHA was called to the scene to investigate, but Ryan said it was just a horrible accident. Cambridge Fire added that, despite precautions, construction sites remain dangerous places to work.

“Most construction sites, including this one, safety is number one with them," Sheehan said. "But, as we all know, they are inherently a dangerous environment.”

Cambridge Police, Cambridge EMS and MIT Police were also on scene for the incident.

Police said Vassar Street between Massachusetts Avenue and Audrey Street was closed due to the response, but was later reopened.
