CHATHAM, Mass. — Authorities in Chatham rescued a teenager who became buried in the sand on Sunday afternoon.

At 5:00 p.m., the Chatham Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a teenage girl was buried in the sand after the hole she was digging, and the dune area surrounding her collapsed.

Dispatchers were able to use the caller’s longitude and latitude information to locate the scene on North Beach Island.

Trained paramedics accompanied the Chatham Harbor Master to the island.

The 15-year-old girl was buried up to her neck in the sand but was in stable condition.

Personnel from the fire department and harbor master placed a protective barrier over her to minimize further collapse. They were able to get her out.

The victim, who has not been identified, was brought to the Chatham fish pier by boat and was evaluated by an ambulance.

She was declared uninjured and not transported to the hospital.
