Man facing slew of charges after firing shot, barricading himself inside Reading apartment

READING, Mass. — Police and a SWAT team responded to an apartment building on Woburn Street after the building's owner reported his teenage godson was shoveling snow late Tuesday when a tenant fired a gun near him.

Reading Deputy Police Chief David Clark said officers responded around 11:45 p.m. to a building with multiple apartments at 183 Woburn St. where Jeffrey Logan, 38, was barricaded inside his apartment after reports he went outside the building and fired a single shot into the air.

Shawn Ferris, the owner of the building, says his 17-year-old godson was outside shoveling when Logan walked up. He says his godson couldn't understand what Logan was saying to him, but then all of a sudden, he pulled out a gun, held it in the air and then fired it above him.

"He definitely felt very threatened, you know. I think he was more shocked," said Ferris.

Residents in other apartments were temporarily evacuated and members of the Northeast Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council SWAT team were called in to help end the standoff, Clark said. After numerous failed attempts to talk to Logan, the SWAT team entered his apartment just before 3 a.m. after the building's landlord provided keys for authorities to enter Logan's second-floor apartment.

After authorities entered, Logan was found in his bedroom and arrested. A silver semi-automatic weapon was found, and Logan does not have a license to carry a firearm, Clark said at a news conference early Wednesday morning.

Investigators are still trying to figure out if Logan went outside and randomly fired the gun or was attempting to scare the teen.

Logan is facing a number of charges including assault with a dangerous weapon; discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling; illegal possession of a firearm; illegal possession of ammunition; intimidation; disturbing the peace; and disorderly conduct. He rolled his eyes to the charges Wednesday as a judge decided he was too dangerous for bail.

Prosecutors say there are four restraining orders against him and a long list of violent convictions.

The judge ordered Logan to remain in jail pending a dangerousness hearing on Feb. 21.
